The Dominican Republic’s agri sector has enough potential to increase export volumes. This was stated by the executive director of the National Competitiveness Council, Peter Prazmowski, during the Public Policy Dialogue organized by the National Confederation of Agricultural Producers (Confenagro).

The country's production volumes has increased in recent years, but its participation in the global market remained mild. According to the director, it is capable of capturing more world markets with more volumes.

Prazmowski also stressed that the U.S. will remain their main export destination. In terms of the most demanded export products, the director highlighted mangoes, avocados and bananas.

The Dominican Republic has an opportunity to identify the policies and needs of the sector to promote them within the framework of the National Competitiveness Council.

According to Wilfredo Cabrera, the president of Confenagro, in the near future, the Dominican Republic will compete with other global suppliers. First, it is necessary to figure out in which part of the process there are deficiencies in production of items with export potential, e.g. pineapples.

Cabrera emphasized that the domestic productive sector competes with a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) which doesn't have defined rules. They compete with countries that subsidize some items and have several advantages that Dominican producers don't have. According to the president, Dominican products would enter the markets of the Caribbean region.
