Dutch onion exports down by 7%

In the Netherlands, the 2023-24 onion export season is far from satisfactory, with results below those of the 2022-23 and 2021-22 campaigns.

According to the local media, based on export figures from GroentenFruit Huis, the volume of onions exported reached 1.04 million tonnes. This is 7% down on the 2022-23 season and 20% down on the 1.3 million tonnes for the 2021-22 season.

Senegal is once again the No. 1 destination for Dutch onions this season, with a volume of 170,465 tonnes, 8,000 tonnes more than in 2022-23. Next in line is the UK with 131,239 tonnes, 20,000 tonnes less than in 2022-23, followed by Côte d'Ivoire with 99,920 tonnes, 25,000 tonnes less than in 2022-23.

The 2023-24 marketing year saw volumes fall to Germany (-13,000 tonnes) and France (-10,000 tonnes), but also to Malaysia (-16,000 tonnes) and Indonesia (-11,000 tonnes), as well as to the Dominican Republic (-13,000 tonnes) and Nicaragua (-11,500 tonnes). Conversely, higher volumes were reported for exports to Israel (+9,000 tonnes), Italy (+8,000 tonnes) and Brazil (+6,500 tonnes).
